What to Expect of the Weight Loss Procedures:

(Data collected from Wisconsin Bariatrics 2001-2005)

Measurement:

We measure progress by the percentage of the Excessive Weight Loss.

For example, a 50% EWL means the patient has lost 50% of his or her excessive weight. If the patient is 100 lbs overweight, then it equates to a 50 lb weight loss. If the patient is 200 lbs overweight, then it equates to a 100 lb weight loss.

Gastric Bypass (420 cases) : These patients have the most improvement.
1 yr – 67%
2 yr – 68%
3 yr – 64%
4 yr – 63%

Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (156 cases): ---------- 1 yr – 52%
2 yr – 58%
3 y -- 54%
4 yr – 58%

LAP-BAND® (495 cases): ----------------------------- 1 yr –43%
2 yr – 44%
3 yr – 46%
4 yr – 52%

Long-term weight loss data is difficult to obtain. There is only one 15 year follow-up weight loss study in the English literature for gastric bypass, and that study indicated that the expected weight loss is 50%.
Therefore, bariatric surgeons try to use that measured outcome as their goal for success. However, among diabetic patients, a mere 10% weight loss will control their diabetes significantly.
