It is also called Awake Liposuction. This procedure is performed in the office under local anesthesia to numb the area and to decrease bleeding. Unwanted fat is permanently removed with the suction machine. Typical areas are in the lower abdomen.

The tumescent solution is injected into the tissues (fat) prior to liposuction causing the targeted areas to be come tumescent, or swollen and firm. Study shows the tumescent liposuction remarkably reduces bleeding and complications than non tumescent liposuction.

Local anesthesia is widely regarded as the safest form of anesthesia. Because local anesthesia persists for many hours there is no need for narcotic pain medications after surgery.

Most of tumescent liposuction patients could go back to work in three days.

Designed to remove unwanted excessive skin and fat from the body



As patients lose weight after bariatric surgery, some loose skin may develop in the lower part of their abdomen. While some patients do not develop that much excessive skin, other patients who do develop an unsightly excessive skin condition are interested in corrective surgery.

Generally, younger patients have more elastic skin, which naturally recedes with their weight loss, and usually do not need to be concerned over excessive skin conditions.

In addition, slower weight loss over a longer period of time may give your skin the chance to naturally recede at the same pace as your weight loss.

Finally, patients can focus on maintaining good hydration and moisturizing their skin – which is important to keep your skin healthy and supple -- and may help to prevent excessive skin conditions.

However, for those patients who do develop an excess skin condition after their weight stabilizes and they have reached their target weight goal, then it may be time to consider corrective surgery when indicated. Insurance Coverage:
Generally, your insurance company will cover this procedure when it is associated with health issues, such as recurrent yeast dermatitis, rash, sores, etc. In order to proceed with a procedure under insurance coverage, we will need documentation from the patients’ primary care doctors, or dermatologists concerning the patient’s skin conditions. As part of the process, we will assist our patients by taking medical pictures to submit to their insurance companies. If the surgical procedure is pre-authorized by your insurance company or other financing is arranged, then the surgery can be scheduled.

The Procedure:
The surgical procedure usually requires about 2 hours to perform and is generally performed under general anesthesia: A bikini line is made from hip to hip and the belly button is usually dropped, and will be moved up to the level of the hip. The skin and the underlying fat layer is removed and stitched back together in separate layers. No skin staples are used in the procedure, and 2 drains are intentionally left in place and will be removed in our office about 2 weeks after surgery. Patients will be required to empty the drainage tubes on a daily basis. An abdominal binder must be worn for 2 months after surgery.

Self – Financing (Denied by the Insurance or Cosmetic needs):
For those patients with a limited amount of excessive skin and who are self-financing the procedure, this procedure may also be performed under local anesthesia in our offices.

Complications:
Include: Bleeding, infection, wound healing problems, and other issues which can occur in any surgical procedure.
