Sleeve Gastrectomy:
This is the newest restrictive bariatric procedure. It is also done laparoscopically.
Procedures:
5 small incisions are made and the stomach is re-shaped to the shape of a banana.
About 80% of the stomach is removed. This is not reversible.
The theory behind this procedure is in the hormone Ghrelin. This hormone is produced
in the main part of the stomach. It stimulates appetite. When that part of the stomach
is removed, patients will lose their appetite, and they can only eat smaller portions.
Consequently they will lose weight.
Result:
Most studies show good early weight loss. We do not have long term weight loss data
or how this will pan out in the future. Patients who are on a lot of medications,
where bypass may interfere with the absorption of the meds, this is another alternative
to consider.
